An explosion at a data center belonging to Shaw Communications, one of the largest Internet Service Providers in Canada, left much of downtown Calgary without Internet for a few days.

The explosion ignited a fire in Shaw’s offices, destroying electrical equipment in critical data transfer and telecommunication areas. This directly caused the loss of extremely valuable data.

IBM Canada leases three floors in the Shaw building where they house a massive data center. The data center provides essential services for a range of corporate and Canadian government clients.

Also hit by the outage were several hospitals, whose vital administrative and clinical information systems were rendered inaccessible. Although the Shaw building was reinforced with backup networks, the explosion compromised those backups. In the days following the explosion, the provincial government received harsh criticism for failure to have a proper data archiving plan in place.

MagnaStor’s off-site replication capabilities would have averted this major data crisis. In case of explosion, fire or other natural distaste, MagnaStor clients such as governments, hospitals and businesses can be confident that their data is archived and protected.
